An audio engineer is the person responsible for the technical quality of recorded sound: capturing performances cleanly, editing takes, and mixing the parts into a balanced, finished track. What an audio engineer does day to day.

On a studio day, the engineer is in before the session starts: pulling up the session file, patching in gear, placing microphones, and getting headphone mixes ready. During tracking they set and ride levels, punch in fixes, keep takes organized, and solve the hundred small technical problems a session throws at them, fast enough that the artist never loses momentum.

Between sessions the work moves to editing and mixing: comping the best takes together, tuning and timing cleanup, then the slow craft of a mix, where every fader move and EQ decision is a judgment call about what serves the song. Engineers also maintain the studio itself, because a session that goes down over a bad cable is the engineer's problem.

The role is distinct from the producer's, and the two work as a pair. The producer owns the creative vision of the record; the engineer owns the technical execution. Plenty of people eventually do both, but on a professional session it is the engineer who makes the room work.

Where audio engineers work.

Recording studios are the classic home, but they are one market among several. Engineers work in live venues and touring rigs, broadcast and streaming, film and television post-production, podcast studios, game audio, houses of worship, and corporate events. The fundamentals transfer: someone who can capture and balance sound cleanly is employable across all of them.

Employment shapes vary just as widely. Some engineers are staff at studios or stations; many are freelance, building a client roster session by session. Early careers often mix a steady technical job in one lane with freelance music work in another until the music side can carry itself.

There is no license and no required degree. What the field actually runs on is demonstrated skill and trust: engineers get hired because someone has heard their work or will vouch for them. For a public reference point, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics put the median for the occupation group that includes sound engineering technicians (broadcast, sound, and video technicians) at $56,600 a year in May 2024, with the lowest ten percent under $33,980 and the top ten percent above $104,610. Freelance studio engineers sit outside those payroll figures: early on they typically earn less while building a client base, and established engineers with strong credits can out-earn the top of the salaried range.
